Sebagai informasi, Kasudin Gulkarmat Jakarta Selatan, Asril Rizal, kemudian mengkonfirmasi dengan tegas, “Jumlah objek yang terbakar ada sembilan kios, dugaan pembakaran menggunakan bensin.” Tidak berhenti di situ, amukan massa juga menyebabkan enam unit sepeda motor dan satu mobil ikut menjadi korban kobaran api. Dengan kata lain, suasana mencekam langsung menyelimuti area tersebut.
Lokasi kejadian berpusat di sepanjang area kuliner yang ramai, yang letaknya sangat dekat dengan Taman Makam Pahlawan (TMP) Kalibata. Menariknya, laporan pertama justru datang dari Kepala Pos Polisi Kalibata yang segera menghubungi petugas damkar sekitar pukul 23.35 WIB. Merespon laporan itu dengan cepat, petugas pun mengerahkan pasukan tidak tanggung-tanggung: enam unit pompa, dua unit quick response, satu unit watermist Bintaro, serta komando 401 langsung diterjunkan ke lokasi. Untungnya, tidak ada korban jiwa dalam kebakaran hebat ini, meskipun kerugian material ditaksir mencapai angka fantastis, yaitu Rp 273 juta. Asril kembali menegaskan, “Korban jiwa nihil. Taksiran kerugian Rp273 juta.” Proses pemadaman berlangsung alot; api baru berhasil dilokalisasi pukul 00.02 WIB dan akhirnya benar-benar padam satu jam kemudian, tepatnya pukul 01.02 WIB.
Lalu, apa sebenarnya akar masalah dari semua kerusuhan ini? Ternyata, semua berawal dari tragedi penganiayaan berujung maut terhadap dua “mata elang” di Jalan Raya Kalibata pada hari yang sama. Ceritanya, kedua pria ini awalnya menghentikan seorang pengendara sepeda motor. Akan tetapi, aksi mereka justru memantik reaksi spontan dari lima orang yang berada di dalam mobil di belakang motor tersebut. Kapolsek Pancoran, Kompol Mansur, menjelaskan kronologinya, “Nah, setelah diberhentiin, tiba-tiba pengguna mobil di belakangnya membantu.” Akibatnya, situasi langsung berbalik; kelima orang tersebut malah memukuli kedua debt kolektor itu dan bahkan menyeret mereka ke pinggir jalan. Pada akhirnya, insiden inilah yang menjadi pemicu utama amarah dan aksi balas dendam.
Kemudian, kabar duka tentang tewasnya dua rekan mereka ini langsung menyulut emosi massa. Dengan penuh amarah, para rekan para “mata elang” tersebut kemudian meluapkan kekesalan dengan cara yang sangat destruktif. Mereka secara membabi-buta merusak serta membakar lapak dan kios para pedagang yang berada di sekitar lokasi pengeroyokan. Alhasil, dalam sekejap, kawasan yang biasanya ramai dengan penjual makanan itu berubah menjadi lautan api dan kepiluan. Singkatnya, aksi balas dendam yang spontan dan emosional ini telah menciptakan kerugian yang sangat besar bagi banyak pihak yang tidak bersalah.
