Kualifikasi ini juga jadi ujian pertama bagi pelatih baru Gerald Vanenburg yang kini memegang kendali Timnas U23. Sistem round-robin membuat laga terakhir melawan Korea Selatan bisa jadi penentu hidup-mati. “Artinya, draw lawan Korea Selatan masih bisa diterima, asal kita menang telak di dua laga sebelumnya. Ini sekaligus jadi pemanasan buat SEA Games nanti—tim Vanenburg harus menunjukkan progres,” jelas Gita, yang juga jurnalis olahraga senior.
Ia menambahkan, “Kalau lihat grup ini, target lolos sangat mungkin tercapai. Masa iya dapat 7 poin enggak masuk runner-up terbaik?”
Kunci utama, menurut Gita, ada di pertandingan melawan Korea Selatan. Strategi terbaik adalah memaksimalkan hasil di dua laga awal. “Minimal, kita harus tahan imbang Korea Selatan, lalu menang besar lawan Laos dan Makau. Ingat, dulu di tangan STY, kita bisa tahan mereka 120 menit. Sekarang, Vanenburg harus bisa bikin tim lebih solid,” tandasnya penuh keyakinan.
