Selain investasi, Trump juga meminta Indonesia membuka keran impor lebih lebar untuk produk AS. Trump menekankan, “Indonesia harus menghapus tarif, memberantas hambatan non-tarif, dan mencabut aturan perdagangan yang membatasi produk AS.”

Trump menjelaskan, tarif 32% ini bukan tanpa alasan. Menurutnya, hubungan dagang AS-Indonesia selama ini timpang. Meski negosiasi sudah berjalan lama, defisit perdagangan AS tetap membengkak karena kebijakan protektif Indonesia.

Data Badan Pusat Statistik (BPS) mengonfirmasi ketimpangan yang dikeluhkan Trump. Sepanjang Januari-April 2025, neraca perdagangan Indonesia ke AS mencatat surplus terbesar, yakni US$6,42 miliar. Angka ini lebih tinggi ketimbang surplus ke India (US$4 miliar) dan Filipina (US$2,92 miliar).
