Plt Kepala Balai Pelestarian Kebudayaan Wilayah XVIII, Muhammad Tang, menilai bahwa pengusulan ini penting. Pasalnya, negara-negara di Amerika Utara, seperti Kuba, juga mengajukan makanan sejenis ke UNESCO.
Tang mengatakan bahwa timnya sedang mengusulkan Jepa sebagai warisan budaya tak benda agar dapat diajukan ke UNESCO, Senin (10/3/2025).
Dia meminta Pemerintah Provinsi Sulbar untuk mendukung dan memperhatikan potensi budaya daerah agar tetap lestari.
Dukungan dari Pemprov Sulawesi Barat
Gubernur Suhardi Duka menyambut baik inisiatif ini dan menyatakan dukungan penuh terhadap upaya tersebut.
“Saya mendukung penuh upaya Balai Pelestarian Kebudayaan untuk mengusulkan Jepa sebagai warisan budaya tak benda di UNESCO,” kata Suhardi.
Namun, ia menekankan pentingnya memberikan perhatian tidak hanya pada Jepa, tetapi juga pada seluruh warisan budaya Sulbar yang memiliki nilai ekonomi dan berpotensi untuk dikembangkan lebih lanjut.
“Budaya adalah bagian dari pasar wisata. Ia berupaya memperkenalkan budaya agar semakin dikenal dan memiliki nilai ekonomi.
Mengenal Jepa, Kuliner Khas Mandar
Jepa merupakan makanan khas Mandar yang berbahan dasar singkong dan parutan kelapa. Pengrajin kuliner tradisional di Mandar secara turun-temurun membuat Jepa dengan cara memanggangnya di atas tungku tanah liat. Bentuknya bulat pipih dengan tekstur menyerupai roti, memberikan sensasi renyah di bagian luar dan lembut di dalam. Makanan ini memiliki aroma khas singkong bakar yang semakin menggugah selera. Masyarakat Mandar menyajikan Jepa bersama ikan teri, ikan tuing-tuing, atau cumi yang mereka bumbui dengan khas, sehingga menciptakan perpaduan rasa gurih dan autentik.

Masyarakat Mandar sering menjuluki Jepa sebagai “pizza dari tanah Mandar” karena bentuknya yang menyerupai roti pipih. Kini, variasi Jepa semakin berkembang dengan tambahan topping seperti parutan gula merah, menjadikannya semakin populer di berbagai kalangan.
Balai Pelestarian Kebudayaan Wilayah XVIII mengajukan Jepa ke UNESCO agar makanan khas ini menjadi simbol budaya Sulawesi Barat yang dikenal secara global.
